A heated battle rages on in my work group. I would like to know the pros and cons when comparing X (including Motif) to Windows 3.0? I would like some facts to back up an argument on either side. I guess I'll assume you speak from a 'users' standpoint. In this case (this'll heat things up) I would say X is superior. Lets examine why. X is not limited to a single machine. If you are logged into a machine in Germany from USA, and you have an X server running, you can run X applications (maybe slowly depending on the comm links) and see the GUI 'as it were.. That doesn't happen in Windows. Second, UNIX, bar none, is the ultimate multitasker (Mach included for those who want to throw OS/2 in for threaded code) and that means you can count on Comm programs NOT losing characters. Third, Windows crashes your machine happily. UNIX does not (or VAX/VMS and other OS/s over which X runs). Which brings me the the real point. Windows sucks, BUT DAMN it looks neat. So does the (I'm male so bare (pun) with me) Blonde at the beach. Talk to her, 'cause she can't talk back. Windows and X are similar in one respect and one only. Both are dependent on an operating system above them. Windows=DOS, X=<many>. Does this make a difference??? Well, think market share here. MANY DOS machines, not nearly so many X machines. I won't go into this - marketing is NOT an engineers domain. BUT, the two shells are similar in conceptual operation in a 'computer' sense. So, what am I saying anyway??? Here it is in a nutshell: If its money you want, go Windows, if its REAL operation, Go X. WHY???? Two vastly different reasons. Developers love UNIX. WHY???? Because its a developers paradise. Core dumps (as opposed to machine hangs), TRUE multitasking (not horsecrap non-preemptive - what a joke) and definitely raw power. Go ahead try this in DOS (not Phar Lap type DOS): s = malloc(1,000,000 * sizeof(char)); Uh, Uh. Users???, Windows. There's just too much fun pushing a button and seeing it move (Motif is crummy on this). Ok, enough rambling... Its Friday (miller time, ya know)... I hope everybody thinks on these things. Don't just let your hackles raise. Think on it. No ansers here, If I had 'em I'd be a GaJillionAre. So why did I write this anyway.
