[comp.windows.misc] How do you cost justify a User Interface?

ables@techbook.com (Scott Ables) (05/24/91)

Hello:
I'm involved in a 4+ million dollar implementation of an on-line
parts and labor system for a world wide freight movement company. My boss is
interested in "X" because of where it puts us for future applications. But,
we are having trouble quantifying tangible benefits from going to "X" now.
Waving terms like network transparency, host independent, event driven, etc.
around don't convince upper mngt that its worth it now. I need help under-
standing why "X" is benificial for applications that are character mode based.
I understand that using X-terminals rather than workstations can save money,
but using X-terminals rather than IBM 3151 (char mode) terminals costs a tone
of money.

What I'm looking for here is not simply definitions of terms like
"network transparent" (although thats would be helpful). What I need is
a definitive and exhaustive annotated list of the benefits of using the
X-Window System both now and in the future.

So, mail you two bits to me, I will compile it, and if there is
interest post it here. If such a thing exists tell me that too, please.

	Thanks, for your support,
