TOP Report #1 August 23, 1988

Dear Readers!

GENERAL
-------

We are impressed! So many requests for our software library we never have
expected. Now we want to tell you some experiences and suggestions:

1) Please specify EXACTLY the desired disk format. If possible specify
one of these (normally every system should be able to read one of
them, perhaps you have to edit/patch your floppy device descriptor):

   F2: 3 1/2", 16 Sect/Trk, *all* double density, 80 tracks, and
       sector offset 1 (one)!
   F4: 5 1/4", 16 Sect/Trk, *all* double density, 80 tracks, and
       sector offset 1 (one)!

These are the official Microware standard formats!

(At the moment we have about 6 different sets of master disks!)

2) Perhaps we have made a mistake, but the *CORRECT* address of
   TOP Munich is:

   reccoware systems
   (Wolfgang Ocker) !!!
   -- TOP Munich --

   Lochhauserstrasse 35a
   D-8039 Puchheim
   (W-Germany)

THANK YOU!

BTW: Please realize that Top@mutec is a mail alias and not a real
account. That implies that your mail will be automaticially forwarded
to different sites (and different people).

So, please have some patience, if your answer will delay one or two
weeks (hopefully the WORST case :-).

PROBLEMS OCCURED TILL TODAY:
----------------------------

1) We delivered some sets of disks, where an entry in the SYSINFO-file is
   missing (pls add into SYS/sysinfo):

   # lock entry for UUCP
   lck.uucp,l

2) OXM V 1.3d (OS-9 enhanced mailer): When a mail arrives where the first
7 or more lines of the message body start with a blank, OXM will crash
(and perhaps the whole system if you don't use SSM). This bug will be
   fixed in version 1.3e.

3) uux: This version has hard problems when mail is routed *through*
your system. The bug will be fixed in the next release.

4) os9lib.l: getwd() is buggy buggy buggy! It does not work!

The documention of the library will be included within the next
   release.

5) NOTES: Please make a directory named ".SEQUENCER" in the
SPOOL/NOTES/ dir. Permissions are "d----ewr", Owner-ID ist "NOTES"
(default 1.38). The NOTES-sequencer will not work if the directory
   doesn't exist.

6) NOTES: We have detected a security problem within NOTES. This will
be fixed in the next release.

OUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT THREE MONTHS:
------------------------------------

1) We will release four very nice games:
   - Yahtzee, a cube game
   - (Old) Empire: a multi user strategy game
   - ve (Visual Empire): it makes it easy to manage your empire country
   - Robots: a famous action game
   - Wanderer: A kind of "Boulder Dash"

2) Omega (I don't know it and have never seen it, but Reimer is enthusiatic
   about it)

3) A new SHELL, but we have to check the copyrights, so we can't tell
   you more about it ...

4) Complete curses library for TERMCAP (we *don't* like TERMINFO, although
   we've got it running ...)

5) Update disk:
contains updates for the current release, for example:
   - OXM 1.3e: allows local aliasing, input editing, rerouting
   - new uux
   - new version of os9lib.l and documentation for it
   - new notes

Please don't send us any disks now, we will tell you when they are
available!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTE: Our e-mail address will change in October! We will tell
you in time.
