[comp.os.os9] Can you help?

v8803330@cc.nu.oz (06/06/89)

My brother has a CoCo III with 128K anda single drive and is having problems
getting various software to interact with other software. For example, he
loads MULTIVIEW which runs under OS9 levell II and when he tries to do a COPY
from one disk to another he gets a "can't fork" error.
Another problem is that once OS9 is loaded in, and you remove the disk from
the drive, you can not do any thing from OS9, for example, if you get an error
you have to reload the OS9 disk to find out the error.
Would adding a second drive overcome these problems?
Does anybody know how to overcome this problem?

Most likely he's out of memory. Multi-Vue takes up quite a bit itself,
and opens up at least one graphics window (much more expensive in
memory usage than text windows). Probably there just isn't another
8K block of RAM for forking off the Copy process.

Most Coco-nuts say that Multi-Vue is useless without 512K.
Actually you can now get a 256K upgrade (that uses the 128K chips already
in the Coco III) from Burke & Burke (see Rainbow ads), which is cheaper
than a full 512K upgrade.

I don't believe in Multi_vue myself, but most worthwhile OS9-L2
applications need more than 128K. Your brother should put memory
expansion at the top of his shopping list.
