[comp.os.os9] OS9 on Atari ST

D.M.Johnson@newcastle.ac.uk (D.M. Johnson) (07/30/90)

        I have seen that OS9 is avaiabel for the Atari ST, as I know very
little about this operating system I was wondering if you could answer a few
questions about it.

        (1) Is it a multitasking o.s. ?
        (2) Does it allow multiple sign ons, The idea here is to have the ST
linked up with friends computers in a flat and have a small network.
        (3) I have some knowledge of unix commands, are the os9 commands like
them ( I know the ls is dir on os9 any other big changes).

        (4) How much memeory does it require?

Yours

Call Microware in the UK, phone 0489-886699 or fax 0489-576290.
Ask for Amanda Forrest, and she'll gladly tell you all about it. Be
sure to ask for the OS-9 catalog, and give her my regards.

     Yes. The number of processes is realistically limited only by
     RAM.

>(2) Does it allow multiple sign ons, The idea here is to have the ST
>linked up with friends computers in a flat and have a small network.

     Any number of users may be signed on at one time. Each user, of course,
     must have their own serial port (on the ST). So, you are limited to
     2 users.

>(3) I have some knowledge of unix commands, are the os9 commands like
>them ( I know the ls is dir on os9 any other big changes).

     The commands are very similar to what is available under unix
     (grep/make/makdir/deldir/del/procs/chd). If you are very used to
     unix, it may take some time to get accustomed to the OS-9 command
     names.

>(4) How much memeory does it require?

     My 1 Meg system works well even with a 256k RAMdisk. If I had a faster
     hard disk, I'd go without a RAMdisk so more modules could be RAM resident.

If you would like more (FREE) information, you should call our marketing
dept. at (515) 224-1929 and ask for "The OS-9 Catalog." It contains all
sorts of information about OS-9 and its associated environments.

Best regards,

Of course, if you purchase Double-Click's RS-232 port multi-thingy you could
write a device driver in fairly straightforward fashion (M. Vederman of
Double-Click is an OS-9 user, he may already have drivers), and the same
should be true of Gadgets' new MegaTalk serial port enhancement.

There is a very nice port of OS-9 to the ATARI avaiable in Europe.
It's the Cumana package with some extensions. This includes:

 * The professional OS-9/68000 including the C-Compiler
 * Sculptor data base system
 * Dynacalc spredsheet
 * Stylograph text editor
 * MGR window system for the ATARI (!!!!!!!)
 * Virtual terminals
 and others more...

The price is about DM 1500,--
That's not too much I think, because it is the best port to ATARI
I've ever seen... and it has the most ``extras''.

To work with with all the sugar (MGR, virtual terminals, some applications)
I recommend the use of 2 MBytes RAM and at least 20MB Harddisk. If You
don't have that much it will run, too. But it isn't that fast if You
want to use all that features... and You should be experienced as DJ.

BTW: I don't do the advertisement for reccoware!!! It's only the best
     on ATARI I think.
