[comp.os.os9] need info on memory upgrades

56K - 48K = 8K, the (rather large, unfortunately) unit in which the GIME
lets one allocate RAM, so somehow you've got your customized diskette set
up so that an extra unit is required. The first culprit I'd look at is
/dd/cmds/shell on your custom diskette. Did you leave things out of it to
try to use less RAM? The reason they added all those other commands to
the file is that the shell is barely 1K long, so a tad less than 7K would
be wasted if all that was in /dd/cmds/shell was just the shell.

Radio Shack's prices for the 512K upgrade may have improved since the
last time I looked--the 1989 catalog, I think, came out in the midst of
the gov't-induced RAM shortage, and had a pretty outrageous price. I
got a Disto 512K upgrade some time ago (lucked out and did it before the
RAM shortage), and if you get any upgrade with the RAM already installed,
then it's trivial to install it yourself. I'm hardwarily incompetent, and
it was no problem for me, so anybody should be able to do it. :-)

Great. Be sure to get on the BITNET CoCo mailing list and check out some
of the files available from its file server, most notably various patches
that speed up and correct some pesky bugs in WindInt, and Kent Meyers's
patches to MultiVue if you plan to use that environment.

I also bought the Disto RAM upgrade and would reccommend it. I bought it
without RAM and installed the chips myself.
I saved some money doing that but if you are unsure of how to go
about doing it you should probably by the upgrade with RAM. Installing
the upgrade itself is quite easy and the instructions that came with
the board were clear enough for even a novice. Having 512K is much
nicer and well worth the expense.
