[comp.os.os9] OS9 on a MS-DOS machine

stevek@videovax.tv.tek.com (Steve Kronschnabel) (12/01/90)

I've recently purchased a used coco3 that had OS9 Level II on it. I'm having
so much fun with it. Then I heard that there was OS9 availble for the PC.
I was wondering how good it was and if you can run standard PC programs while
running OS9. I suspect that you can't but thought I would ask.

Thanks for any information that is sent my way...

There are two ways to run OS-9 stuff (sort of) on a PC. The first is to
purchase a card which typically has a 68000/10/20 on it, which plugs
into your PC, and lets you run OS-9 on the card while using the PC's I/O
devices. I believe that most of these will support hot-key switching
between OS-9 and DOS, running programs concurrently. Two possible
sources for these cards are Ultrascience (312-256-0800) and Scorpion
Technologies (408-452-0700). Cost is probably in the ~$1000 range.

The second way is to purchase OS-9000 for your PC >= 386(sx). OS-9000 is
source level compatible with OS-9, provides the same utilities, comes
with C compiler and C source-level debugger and editor for $995. RAVE is
available for graphics support, or you could roll your own. Contact me
at (408)980-0201 for more information.

You're welcome.

You should mention, OS9000 only has C. No Fortran, Basic, or Pascal.
This does limit it's usefulness vs. OS9/68K. Can OS9000 read/write
MS-DOS files, or will the as yet unreleased MS-DOS emulator bequired to
do this? Also, what terminal type does the monitor emulate when running
under OS9000?

With version 1.1 of the OS-9000/80386 DevPak (tm), there is a PCF file
mananger which allows MS-DOS disks to be read and written. Both floppy
disks and MS-DOS hard disk partitions can be accessed. The term device
on OS-9000 (keyboard/monitor) emulates a VT100 terminal.

The standard OS-9000 PC-AT DevPak does not have graphics support, so the
screen is supported in text mode. RAVE for OS-9000 will give full graphics
access to VGA/Super VGA, including code generation for sophisticated
multimedia user interfaces.
