[net.works] Windowing, the tidal wave of the future...

I believe the word is inundated.

The Window and icon concepts are nice for creating an easy to understand user
interface. Modes are mostly eliminated and encapsulated in menus or windows.
It is easy to regulate how much you see using a menu and opening appropriate
windows on an icon.

However, It seems that almost every time a mouse button is pressed in one of
these interfaces a window pops up. It is rather easy to get many empty windows
piled up. This is especially true of the Interlisp debugger.

Is there some intermediary twixt window and icon that can represent a bit more
info? I can imagine all sorts of things that might do this, but could someone
provide me with an example from a real system?
