I think we all know that Unix is not the be all and end all of operating systems, that we have learned enough in the last five years to do a far better job (a la Apollo, DG's AOS, ... ad infinitum). At the same time, we had better be prepared to live with the fact that it is now a de facto industry standard, much as Fortran and Pascal are. We are lucky that Unix is simple enough that it is easy to provide compatibility under other, better operating systems. And despite the fact that much of the software that comes with Unix is trash, there is enough good stuff to make it worthwhile to support unix or a unix-compatible interface. Nuf said? ron
