Berkeley ISP Interactive Statistics Software Berkeley ISP is a flexible and highly interactive statistics software system that runs on UNIX.* Developed by the U. C. Berkeley Department of Statistics, it is well suited for both general purpose data analysis and instruction at all levels. It includes standard statistical routines, many advanced techniques, instructional programs, a collection of datasets for use in examples, and on- line documentation for all commands. A comprehensive tutorial introduction will be published together with the on-line reference documentation by W. W. Norton & Company, New York. Extensive convenience features include the ability to abbreviate commands, customize output, review and edit a history of the current session, combine frequently used commands, add local programs, call UNIX programs and subroutines from within ISP, and call ISP commands and subroutines directly from UNIX. Berkeley ISP is fast, efficient, easy to learn and use, and easy to administer. 15 students can simultaneously use it on a VAX 750 (2Mb memory with FPA) with barely noticeable impact on system response. Berkeley ISP uses highly reliable algorithms, for dependably correct statistical calculations. Current Use and Future Directions. Both software and documentation have been thoroughly tested. Since 1982, ISP has been used extensively--and with great success--by the Department of Statistics in undergraduate courses at all levels and for graduate instruction and research. It is used by other Berkeley departments (Anthropology, Business Administration, Chemistry, etc.) and by other sites, both academic, non-academic and commercial. The Berkeley Department of Statistics is committed to providing excellent statistical software. Further development of Berkeley ISP is partially funded by the U. C. Berkeley College of Letters and Science. Our primary goals are to include all statistics procedures commonly taught in courses; to provide a high-quality, flexible, and easy-to-use graphics interface which works with a variety of output devices; and to support ISP on a wide range of computers. We are paying particular attention to the new generation of advanced UNIX workstations. Availability, Licensing, and Support. Berkeley ISP is available now for computers running BSD UNIX and its derivatives. It will be available soon for System V UNIX. The software is licensed on an annual basis for either single CPUs or unlimited site use. The distribution includes source code, so that it can be recompiled for alternate machines as permitted by the license. Telephone consulting is available for both software installation and use.
