HCR Corporation has just introduced a UNIX System V Release 3.1 VAX Porting Kit to provides UNIX source code licensees with the basis for porting the latest UNIX release to their VAX configurations. HCR is also offering optional installation and consulting programs with the kit. AT&T's VAX UNIX licensees found themselves without a migration path when AT&T stopped offering new UNIX System V releases on VAX. The HCR VAX version is a full-featured UNIX System V Release 3.1 derived from the Release 3.1 source code for the AT&T 3B2. It runs existing System V Release 2 VAX binaries and is customized for a generic VAX configuration. Due to the vast variety of existing VAX configurations further site-specific customization work will probably be required, for example to integrate peripheral device drivers. HCR's installation and consulting services are designed to minimize the cost of such customization work to those customers lacking the resources to do it themselves. The VAX Porting Kit comes with an HCR developed STREAMS pseudo- device driver allowing the use of the RFS loop back feature which allows the simulation of the higher levels of RFS within one VAX. The main use of this feature is to test application programs and give RFS demonstrations with only one VAX.
