I recently proposed the newsgroup net.works.apollo for discussion of Apollo workstations. The results were as follows: About 10 favorable responses, including strong support from Brown and Yale Universities, both of which have many, many Apollos and lots of interested people. About 4 negative responses, mostly of the form, 'Why have a net.works.apollo when net.works gets so little traffic.' Good question, I suspect that a newsgroup devoted especially to the topic of a given workstation will increase participation, particularly if bug reports and software submissions are encouraged. A final point, net.works.apollo would also be the Usenet posting place for the ARPA Internet "Apollo" distribution which is maintained by Nat Mishkin at Yale. So, does this represent reasonable support for the group? I'd argue in favor, if only to get access to the Arpa material. Unless there is really vociferous opposition to the creation of the newsgroup, then I'll probably create it in a week or so. Comments to net.news.group or decvax!ittvax!wxlvax!dann.
