Unicus Corporation Press Release -- 1 February 1988 Unicus Corporation announces the ReachForth Library for UNIX. The library is an emulator construction kit that allows a system house, value added reseller, or software developer to incorporate universal terminal emulation into their software packages. The compiler and runtime system for Unicus' ReachForth language are packaged into the ReachForth Library for the C programmer. An application that uses the library is able to communicate with any other computer system, regardless of the protocols the other system uses. This permits connectivity in a multi-vendor environment. ReachForth is a high-level language designed for describing terminal and protocol behavior. The language is fully Turing-equivalent and features a syntax designed for processing character streams. It also features a large number of built in primitives for manipulating virtual terminal screens and file transfer protocol packets. The ReachForth compiler translates ReachForth programs -- usually referred to as "protocol descriptions" -- into a runtime reloadable format. The runtime system is linked with an application and provides routines for loading and executing protocol descriptions to interpret character streams. Unicus will customize the library to use different display devices as required. Unicus offers varying levels of support for the library, including "off the shelf" protocol descriptions for common terminals and file transfer protocols, preparation of custom protocol descriptions, seminars about the ReachForth programming language, and custom ports of the ReachForth Library to new computer systems as required. Email and telephone support is also available.
