New Journal Helps UNIX and Xenix System Administrators

Rescue, California, September 15, 1988 --
InfoPro Systems today announced the launch of its new publication: root,
The Journal of UNIX/Xenix System Administration. The bimonthly journal
is "a practical guide to the art and science of running and managing a
UNIX or Xenix-based system", according to David Fiedler, publisher.
Charter subscriptions to root will be available at an introductory rate
until December 31, 1988, according to Fiedler, with a special discount for
Usenet readers.

Bruce Hunter, the editor of root, said "The rapidly-growing number of
smaller machines running UNIX and Xenix have created a generation of
system administrators that haven't had the benefit of experience in
running their machines. These people are often left to learn the
intracacies of administration on their own, which can be the least
cost-effective training method for a company."

David Fiedler and Bruce Hunter are the co-authors of the best-selling
book "UNIX System Administration", published by Hayden Books, now in its
sixth printing. InfoPro Systems, in business since 1981, is the
publisher of UNIX-oriented periodicals, including root and UNIQUE.

Typical articles in root will include:

Manager's Corner: a discussion of problems affecting managers: working
with users and executives, PC proliferation, security, and
software/hardware expansion issues.

System Scenario: a description of an actual emergency that a system
administrator had to handle, and the analysis of his solution.

Software Review: A report of software written for system administrators.
root will cover both commercial and public-domain programs.

Network Notes: helpful hints about using and managing networks, whether
you're talking to Internet, Usenet, or an internal LAN.

New Products: recent announcements of products for backup, data
recovery, security, and other areas of interest.

Tips and Techniques: a short feature about a tricky topic, like setting
baud rates, understanding the /etc/inittab file, or debugging a printer
driver.

Tutorials: root's tutorial series will comprise almost a correspondence
course in all phases of system administration and management.

                     Special USENET Discount

The normal price of a one-year subscription to root will be $72.
An introductory price of $28 will be made available to subscribers who
mention this USENET posting. This will be the lowest price available
anywhere. The first issue of root will be available by the end of 1988,
and probably at the Monterey Usenix workshop in November.
