This is a bit different from other workstations that have been discussed on this list, but does anyone know anything about the IBM Instruments Computer System, aka the CS9000? It appears to be a capable M68K-based laboratory system. Any information, first- or second-hand, would be welcomed. Mike

From: Bruce Hamilton <Hamilton.ES@PARC-MAXC.ARPA> See the February Byte for a favorable review of the IBM Instruments Computer System, aka the CS9000. It's been out over a year, with ads in Scientific American and whatnot; I'm amazed it hasn't gotten more attention. That's media hype (or lack thereof) for you. --Bruce

When I worked at the Carnegie-Mellon CS dept, one of these was being evaluated by the comp center for use as an intermediate machine for the much vaunted C-MU/IBM joint venture. Basically, some IBM minion brought this thing up as a suggestion, it was checked out, and summarily laughed out the door. The fellow who did the evaluating was Phil Almquist, now a grad student at Stanford CS (sorry, I don't have his address). You might also obtain a copy of the report he wrote by writing to Tom Bajzek, care of: Computation Center Carnegie-Mellon University 5000 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Don't forget to tell him who sent ya! -- Mike Leibensperger @ Masscomp, Westford MA 01886 {tektronix, harpo, decvax}!masscomp!leiby
