Elsie 5, a new version of our two-dimensional gel analysis package, is available at no cost (although you get to provide the tape we'll use to send the software to you). Elsie 5 is a collection of C language programs and documentation for use on UNIX systems. All data (except for gel images) is stored in text files to allow use of standard UNIX utilities. The X Window System (Version 11, Release 2 or 3) is used for gel display on eight-bit color monitors. We do not provide X software on our tape. Elsie 5 makes use of large amounts of off-screen memory for handling gel images, and cannot be used on systems or X terminals without such memory. An article describing Elsie 4 (Elsie 5's predecessor) appears in Analytical Biochemistry, volume 169, pages 49-70 (1988).
