Introduces Hard Disk Partition(tm) v3 San Francisco, California, July 21, 1989: FWB, Inc. of San Francisco, California introduced the latest version of its popular Hard Disk Partition program for Apple Macintosh computers. The new version adds many features including expandable partitions, on-the-fly encryption, and multi-user file access control. "Originally introduced in 1986, Hard Disk Partition was the first partitioning utility released for Macintosh. With version 3, we have enhanced the product to address the changing need of the office environment.", according to FWB's vice-president of engineering, Norman Fong. Hard Disk Partition has evolved into a powerful desk accessory incorporating several new features while retaining its intuitive user interface. Partitions created with Hard Disk Partition utilize contiguous allocation space which improves performance by reducing file fragmentation and desktop updating times. Partitioning is especially useful in multiuser environments where storage must be allocated to multiple users. Partitioning can also secure sensitive files through password protection. Hard Disk Partition v3 includes several new features focused upon the multiuser environment. On-the-fly encryption has been added to provide quick, transparent, but extensive password security. With growing concerns about software theft in the workplace, Hard Disk Partition can now also copy-protect programs on the hard disk, preventing unauthorized copying, while still allowing general use of the applications. Coupled with the read-only protection feature, Hard Disk Partition can generate tamper-proof, virus-proof, and now theft-proof partitions. FWB will also be releasing a system administrator application that provides password override and can restrict user partitioning capabilities. Other new features include: Expandable partitions, password- protection on automatically mounted volumes, removable media support, and partition sizes of up to 4.0 Gigabytes. Retail price of Hard Disk Partition is $79.95. FWB products are available through Apple Macintosh software dealers. Present owners of Hard Disk Partition can upgrade for $30. FWB, Inc. has been developing products specifically for Macintosh hard drives since 1984. Their current products includes the Hard Disk Partition, Hard Disk Util, and Hard Disk DeadBolt software and the Hammer hard drive and tape backup subsystems.
