[comp.newprod] XTree Company releases XTreeNet

jrp@rducky.UUCP (JIM PICKERING) (10/25/89)

XTree Company, publishers of XTree and XTreePro, the
industry standards in disk management software for the IBM
PC, XT, AT, PS/2 and compatible computers, extends its
product line into the Novell Network marketplace with the
release of XTreeNet(TM).

Like XTree and XTreePro, XTreeNet provides workstation users
with a clear graphic display of their directory using a tree
structure, and updates all statistical data as
organizational tasks are performed. With XTreeNet, users
can quickly access, delete, rename, edit, view, list, print
or copy any combination of files within any or all
directories on any number of logged, fixed or floppy
drives, all with a single keystroke. DOS-like commands are
organized into an intuitive interface and on-line help
screens provide quick reference checks.

Unlike XTree and XTreePro, XTreeNet is specifically licensed
for a Novell network and supports and validates all Novell
NetWare security rights before any operation is performed.
For the first time, workstation users can manage personal
files on the network server as well as on their individual
workstation disks.

HIGHEST LEVEL OF NETWORK SECURITY

In addition to its disk management capabilities, XTreeNet
offers network supervisors the highest level of security
available in the network environment.

XTreeNet enhances NetWare's security features by allowing
the supervisor to restrict the programs or files within a
given directory to which a particular user or group of users
may have access. With XTreeNet, the network supervisor can
designate authorized users, set up XTreeNet's program
defaults and determine whether system or hidden files should
be displayed.

For further protection, only the files and directories to
which a user has access rights and can be operated on are
displayed. Other files or directories are "invisible" to
users without proper authorization. Supervisors can also
limit which XTreeNet commands are available for each user in
each directory.

MORE THAN DISK MANAGEMENT

XTreeNet's new productivity features include the ability to
manage up to 16,000 files, log-on to 26 drives
simultaneously, and eliminate typing path commands using a
destination pointer. Other new features include: file
attribute security to protect movement or deletion of hidden
and system files, multiple file specifications so users can
work with up to four particular types of files, and a DOS-
like command line that saves the last 16 commands in a
Command History.

Like XTreePro, XTreeNet also includes a built-in ASCII text
editor called 1Word(TM) that features most word processing
functions, an easy-to-use command structure and WordStar-
like commands. With 1Word users can edit any file and even
remove embedded control characters from text files. 1Word
can also mark, move, copy or delete a block of text, and
offers search and replace capabilities.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURES

While XTreePro and XTreeNet share many similar features,
there are many major differences between the two utilities,
according to Leonard. For example, XTreeNet allows the
NetWare shareable attribute to be modified. XTreeNet
displays NetWare file information such as the creation date,
last accessed dates, file owner, and whether the file is
flagged as indexed or transactional.

PRICING AND REQUIREMENTS

XTreeNet retails for $395 per server and is shipping now.

XTreeNet requires an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or 100% compatible
computer workstation, DOS 2.1 or higher, 256K and Novell
Advanced NetWare version 2.0A, 2.1x, or NetWare 286 ELS.
XTreeNet includes both 3.5" and 5.25" disks and is not copy
protected. Telephone technical support is also available
free of charge to registered users.
