DELL ANNOUNCES ENHANCEMENTS TO UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM

AUSTIN, Texas, November 1, 1989 -- Continuing its expansion
into the UNIX market, Dell Computer Corporation today
announced a new version of its UNIX operating system and
user environment for its family of high-performance Intel
386-based computers.

"The tremendous growth in commercial UNIX applications
is creating a demand for standard, easy-to-use personal
workstations," said G. Glenn Henry, senior vice president,
product group. "Our customers put a high value on ease of
use and personal productivity. The X Window System allows
users to have multiple views of one or more applications on
a bit-mapped graphics display, thereby offering a very
flexible production environment." Other ease-of-use
features include improved system documentation and on-line
manual pages.

The new offering, Dell UNIX System V Release 1.1,
provides enhancements in ease of use, graphics support and
performance. It incorporates improvements to software that
provide enhanced X Window System support, and includes the
latest features from AT&T UNIX System V.3.2.1 and
INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation's 386/ix, Version 2.0.2. In
addition, Dell UNIX System V Release 1.1 features a faster
file system and improved compatibility with XENIX file
systems and diskette formats.

Dell is one of the first companies to include the final
release version of the Open Software Foundation (OSF) Motif
window-manager system. Motif gives X Window System
applications the familiar look and feel of Microsoft Windows
and IBM Presentation Manager. Additionally, the X Window
System is enhanced to support Dell's Graphics Performance
Series, a family of high-performance graphics accelerator
cards and high resolution monitors. These graphics products
offer screen size and graphics resolution to fully realize
the potential of the X Window System. There is also new
support for SunRiver graphics terminals which provide
high-speed, fiber optic connectivity and performance.

Dell was one of the first companies to secure a
trademark from AT&T for the "UNIX" name based on compliance
with AT&T's System V Interface Definition (SVID). Beginning
in February 1989, Dell has introduced a series of Dell UNIX
Systems: the 16 MHz Dell System 316, which supports up to 8
users; the 20 MHz Dell System 310, which supports up to 16
users; and the 25 MHz Dell System 325 supporting up to 32
users.

     Dell Computer Corporation designs, develops,
manufactures, markets, services and supports a complete line
of industry-standard personal computers and workstations. A
publicly held company (traded as NASDAQ:DELL), it is
recognized in independent surveys as having the highest
customer satisfaction level in the industry for PCs. Dell
is located at 9505 Arboretum Boulevard, Austin, Texas,
78759-7299; 800/426-5150, 512/338-4400.
