Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP 700/X family of X Window Graphics Terminals ____________________________________________________________________________ The HP 700/X family of X Window Graphics Terminals are network display stations based on the industry-standard X Window System Version 11, Release 3. When configured as components of an engineering, manufacturing, or business solution, the HP 700/X terminals can substantially reduce the overall hardware , system administration, and system maintenance costs. For certain applications, the HP 700/X terminals can provide a cost-effective and affordable means of adding more user seats on the network. The HP 700/X terminals provide the user with interactive network access to graphics applications, text-based information, and compute resources across systems on the LAN. Programs and data, resident on different computers on the network, can be simultaneously displayed in multiple windows on an HP 700/X terminal. The user can also access systems on the network that do not support the X Window System through TELNET (ANSI-standard terminal emulation). Target applications for the HP 700/X terminals range from design automation in ME and EE CAD, to solutions for CASE, industrial automation, business UNIX, and medicine. Example applications include: * ME-CAD view station * EE-CAD design capture station * Desktop publishing * Software development station * Financial trader workstation * Laboratory information management * Health care information systems * Manufacturing process view station * On-line database inquiry station * Travel reservation systems * Geographic mapping systems The HP 700/X terminals connect directly to a standard IEEE 802.3 / Ethernet local area network and communicate with host systems using TCP/IP. The terminals are designed to operate in multivendor networked environments consisting of systems from HP/Apollo, SUN, DEC, and others. All terminals come standard with a BNC port that supports ThinLAN and an AUI port that supports ThickLAN or StarLAN 10 networks (with MAU). The terminals are available in a variety of low-cost color and monochrome bundled configurations that start at $2995 (U.S. list). Bit-mapped graphics monitors with resolutions of 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 are supported. All units come standard with 1 Mbyte of RAM expandable up to 4 Mbytes and display 16 colors from a palette of 4096 or up to 16 levels of gray-scale. The HP 700/X terminals are designed to deliver performance comparable to entry- level workstations (2-3 MIP-rated) when configured as an X Window display server The terminals include a high-performance dedicated graphics processor (TI 34010) for executing X-server instructions, and a co-processor for efficient handling network communications, keyboard entry and mouse tracking. The HP 700/X terminals are positioned to fill the price, performance and functionality gap between office terminals and diskless workstations. They are a high-end addition to the HP 700 Series family of office terminals and a complementary low-end offering to the HP/Apollo family of workstations.
