[comp.newprod] New Release of UltraScript PC

ib@apolling (Ivan N. Bach) (12/28/89)

QMS, Inc. is pleased to announce the Release 2 of UltraScript PC.
UltraScript PC is a software-based, PostScript-compatible language
interpreter that lets one print a PostScript document on a wide
variety of non-PostScript printers. Release 2 of UltraScript PC
adds support for color printers, PCX files, and several additional
dot matrix and laser printers not supported in the initial release.

UltraScript PC works from within most DOS applications, so users do
not have to write PostScript commands to a file and leave their
application to print.

Through UltraScript PC's support for PCX and TIFF file output, users
can send PostScript quality images to any Group 3 fax machine when
used in conjunction with a fax board that accepts either PCX or TIFF
files as input. The quality of computer-generated fax images is
much better than the quality of images which are scanned by the scanner
attached to a sending fax machine.

UltraScript PC comes in two versions: UltraScript PC with 25 typefaces
for $195.00 and UltraScript PC Plus with 47 typefaces for $445.00.
Both versions of UltraScript PC have been translated into German and
French.

System requirements:
- MS-DOS operating system, Intel 80286, 80386, or 80486 microprocessor,
and at least 1.5 Mbytes of memory. (UltraScript PC will run with
as little as 640K of memory, but you cannot print from within an
application with less than 1.5 Mbytes. UltraScript PC requires
   extended memory.)
- 1.2 or 1.44 Mbyte floppy disk drive and 4 Mbytes of available hard
   disk space.

 Printers supported:
- Canon LBP-8II
- Canon BJ 130
- Epson FX, LX, and LQ series printers
- Epson LQ2550 color printer
- HP LaserJet Series II, IIP, and compatibles
- HP DeskJet and DeskJet Plus
- HP PaintJet and PaintJet XL
- IBM Proprinter
- NEC 5200 series

File formats supported:
- PCX
- TIFF

All laser printers require at least 1 Mbyte of memory in the printer.
Printers that emulate any of the printers listed above are also supported.

This product was reviewed in the September 26 and December 26 issues of
the PC Magazine, and it will be reviewed again in the January 16 issue
of that magazine. The following is a quote from the September 26 review:

"On the PostScript Graphics Speed test, UltraScript PC blew away
the other programs--and the Apple LaserWriter IINTX--producing
    excellent output."
