[comp.newprod] Doubling the Resolution of HP LaserJet Series II Printers

TRANSFORM A LASERJET SERIES II PRINTER INTO A TYPESETTER,
---------------------------------------------------------
AND ATTACH IT TO YOUR IBM PERSONAL COMPUTER OR COMPATIBLE
---------------------------------------------------------

An HP LaserJet Series II printer and the printers that emulate that
printer normally produce images at the resolution of 300 by 300 dots
per inch (dpi). Some companies have tried to increase the horizontal
resolution of these printers, but the vertical resolution was thought
to be fixed at 300 dpi.

DP-Tek, Inc. and QMS, Inc. have jointly developed an amazing new
product called PS 600. The product is called PS 600 because it allows
you to print PostScript(R) images at the resolution of 600x600 dpi.
This product can be used to DOUBLE both the horizontal and vertical
resolution of an HP LaserJet Series II printer or compatible. It can
be used to print drafts of documents at the usual 300x300 dpi, and to
print final versions of documents at 600x300 or 600x600 dpi.

The difference between 300x300 and 600x600 dpi is clearly visible
in both grahics and text. The thinnest lines are twice as thin
as before, the curves and lines are smoother, and the character
outlines look like they were printed on a typesetter. One of our
samples shows the Constitution of the United States, which is a
23-page document, printed 1, 2, 4, 8, and 25 pages per sheet of
paper. If you have a very good eyesight, or if you use a magnifying
glass, you can read every word in this document even when it is
printed on one side of a single sheet of paper.

Only a year ago, you had to pay $2000 or more for a kit that would
transform an HP LaserJet Series II printer into a PostScript printer
with the resolution of 300x300 dpi. The suggested retail price for
PS 600 is only $1195. This price includes the add-in board that
is inserted into a half-length slot of an IBM personal computer or
compatible, a printer controller board that is inserted into the
HP LaserJet Series II printer, and the QMS UltraScript PC(tm) Plus
software with 47 different typefaces.

The installation of PS 600 does not require any modification to
the HP LaserJet Series II printer except the insertion of a new
printer controller board. Even when the PS 600 printer controller
board is plugged into the printer, you can send ASCII and PCL
files to that printer via its parallel port.

UltraScript is the QMS implementation of a PostScript interpreter.
This interpreter has been declared one of the best products of
1989 in the January 16, 1990, issue of "PC Magazine." Just like
the character outlines in Adobe typefaces, the character outlines
used in QMS typefaces have been licensed from companies such as
Linotype and ITC.

PS 600 works with any DOS or Windows application that can generate
PostScript, including PageMaker(R), Word Perfect(R), and Ventura
Publisher(R). One of the big advantages of UltraScript PC is that
you can use it from within your word-processing and desktop-publishing
applications provided that enough memory has been installed in your
personal computer. You can also print PostScript files that were
produced on other computers.
