PSI introduces reliable electronic mail and USENET News services with local flat fee dialup access. Reston, VA, January 23, 1990 - William Schrader, President & CEO, Performance Systems International, Inc. (PSI), today announced new electronic mail and USENET News services for organizations interested in reliable, entry-level electronic information services. "More and more companies require dependable data exchange. These services are a cost-effective way to leverage our current Boston to Washington infrastructure and networking expertise to better support this growing market." Starting February 1, PSI will offer electronic mail relay service for customer's host electronic mail systems using the ubiquitous UUCP protocol through one of several local PSI dialup facilities (currently Albany, Boston, New York City and metropolitan Washington, D.C. with other mid-Atlantic and New England areas to be added soon). By using these local access points, customers have a reliable service which uses dedicated PSI networks rather than long-distance telephone calls using variable fee providers. The basic technology employed is the UUCP protocol which is freely available on hundreds of thousands of machines using the UNIX* operating system today. In addition, this service will be at a fixed rate, encouraging use and insuring more accurate budgeting. For $75/month, companies can now have entry level participation in the information age. USENET news service represents hundreds of special interest groups ranging from sociology to communications technology to forestry and biophysics. It provides a forum for national and international participants to share information on their areas of interest or experience. During the 1980's, conducting business and product/service development work through electronic mail became commonplace. PSI will now use its infrastructure to allow mail to flow more reliably and inexpensively. Other services currently provided by PSI include their Standard Connection Service, integrating customer Local Area Networks (LAN's) into the PSI wide area networks (WANs). This puts organizations in touch with millions of other users from thousands of sites globally and allows their users more interactive network applications, such as transferring files and remotely accessing distant computers. The facilities to provide these services are closely monitored around the clock by staff at PSI's Network Operations Center (NOC). PSI founders, William L. Schrader and Martin L. Schoffstall, are veterans in communications and networking technologies and services and lead a team of experienced service providers. PSI's corporate offices are located in Reston, Virginia. PSI network operations is centered in their Albany, New York facility. ___________________________________________________________________________ *UNIX is a registered trademark of AT&T Bell Laboratories.
