Beaverton, Ore., Jan. 15, 1990 -- Graphic Software Systems Inc. (GSS) today announced support for three additional network interfaces to PC-Xview/16, its X terminal emulator for personal computers. PC-Xview/16 now supports all popular DOS-based TCP/IP networking software, more software than any other X terminal emulator. Support for PC-NFS from Sun Microsystems is being added this month. Support for WIN/TCP from Wollongong and Net/One from Ungermann-Bass will be added next month. PC-Xview/16 will continue to support Excelan's LAN WorkPlace for DOS and FTP Software's PC/TCP PLUS. "For our large, corporate end-users and for our VARs and OEMs, this announcement means that PC-Xview/16 is the most versatile X terminal emulator on the market. "It provides the best fit for their networking needs," said Tom Clarkson, chairman of GSS. PC-Xview/16 converts a PC into a low-cost X Window System terminal. The PC can then function as a fully compatible seat on the network, accessing and sharing applications and data with a UNIX-based host, workstations and other nodes through the X Windows graphics interface. With PC-Xview/16, users also can hotkey between X Windows and the DOS prompt without interrupting their UNIX applications. Typical customers work at Fortune 1000 companies and want to link large bases of installed PCs with their UNIX-based workstations and TCP/IP network. "Our users want X Windows support," said Herbert J. Martin, president of The Wollongong Group Inc. "GSS' PC-Xview gives them access to their organization's UNIX network while letting them keep their PCs. It's the best of both worlds." PC-Xview/16 also supports high-performance boards that implement EGA, VGA and DGIS, GSS' Direct Graphics Interface Standard. DGIS is the most widely supported interface standard for the burgeoning 1024 by 768 high-resolution PC market. It is used by more than 50 hardware suppliers including Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and NEC, with 10 times more applications support than any other high-performance PC interface. "Support for PC-Xview/16 is something that PC-NFS users have been demanding," said Dave Rosenlund, Sun's product manager for PC distributed computing. "With today's announcement of PC-Xview for PC-NFS, GSS will be delivering X Windows to the largest installed base of personal computer TCP/IP and NFS users." In addition to PC-Xview/16, an advanced version that supports up to 16MB of memory for AT-compatible PCs, GSS' X terminal emulator family also supports industry-standard windowing managers such as AT&T's Open Look and OSF's Motif. PC-Xview retails for $295 and PC-Xview/16 retails for $395. Both products are available through dealers, international distributors and GSS's OEM sales force. Customers can order the product direct from GSS at (503) 641-2200.
