NEW VERSION OF EDT+ GIVES DEC USERS MORE POWER. ANDOVER, MASS., MAY 1, 1990...After several months of research and development, Boston Business Computing, Ltd., the leading developer of DEC-compatible software, has announced that it is shipping a new version of EDT+, the only complete emulation of DIGITAL's text editor, VAX EDT, available for MS-DOS and UNIX systems. BBC is scheduled to demonstrate EDT+ 5.0 at DEXPO East (Booth #1032), June 26-28, in Boston, MA. The new release, EDT+ 5.0, is 50% faster than its predecessor and features multiple windows, the ability to edit multiple files using wildcards on the command line, 132-column mode, status line and ruler, insert/overwrite modes, additional color support, adjustable tab stops, command editing and recall from within EDT+, an updated manual, an UNDO command, and improved buffer manipulation. Further enhancements have been made to the EDIT and SAVE commands, HELP, JOURNAL, and LEARN facilities, and the keyboard interface. "Research conducted by Digital Review and Digital News revealed the text editors being used most at VAX sites were EDT 88%, EVE 61%, a customized version of DEC's Text Processing Utility (TPU) 30%, vi 29%, EMACS 26%, and EDT+ 14%," stated Edward J. Gaudet, BBC Marketing Manager. "Although this research indicated that a large segment of EDT aficionados still existed, it also disclosed a growing EVE community. To reach this increasing segment, we've added EVE features as well as those features found 'most important' to users such as speed, windows, undo, keystroke macros, and 132- column support. Clearly, these new features move EDT+ 5.0 into a class with other powerful editors such as EMACS and vi." Additionally, EDT+ 5.0 supports over 50 UNIX systems, many of the popular keyboards such as Digital's LK250, and includes interfaces for EVE, EMACS, vi and WPS. According to Christopher Faylor, Director of Software Development, "EDT+ 5.0 is still the most robust emulation of the VAX EDT available today. The EDT 'modes' offered with EMACS and TPU are only partial implementations. There are incompatibilities with Keypad, Nokeypad, and Line modes, vertical scrolling, and the redefinition of keys, to name just a few." EDT+ has been installed at approximately 6,500 sites worldwide, including Fortune 500 Corporations such as Abbott Labs, Caterpillar Inc., Digital Equipment Corporation, Dupont, Eastman-Kodak, Fermi Labs, GE, Hughes Aircraft, Lawrence Livermore, Lockheed, and Teradyne. At these sites, the majority of EDT+ users consist of software programmers, system managers, and general computer users that have worked on a VAX/VMS system for a number of years and wish to continue using a compatible text editor under UNIX and MS-DOS. Currently, EDT+ is resold by the following OEMs: Accelr8 Technology, Alliant, Bull H.N. WIS, FPS, Convex, Encore, Gould, Intergraph, Modcomp, and Stardent. In addition, EDT+ is reference-sold by the 88open Consortium Ltd., Convergent, Data General, Digital Equipment Corporation, Evans & Sutherland, Hewlett-Packard, MIPS, Motorola, Prime, Pyramid, Sequent, Solbourne, Sony, Sun Microsystems, Tektronix, and Unisys. EDT+ 5.0 is available now. Licenses start at $295.00 and include a 30-day, money-back guarantee and free customer support and updates for 60 days. Customers and OEMs under maintenance will receive the new version free of charge. Annual Maintenance Plans are available.
