Legato NetWorker: The Complete Backup and Recover Product
Legato NetWorker is a unique, easy-to-operate product that protects
files against loss, network-wide. At the same time, it speeds file
recovery so users never waste time re-creating valuable work.
Legato NetWorker easily adapts to your environment. It uses
industry-standard network protocols and no changes are made to the
operating system of any platform. And as your network and volume of
files expands, NetWorker has the capacity and performance to handle
the load.

A NetWorker backup server provides backup and recover capability for
client systems across the entire network.
Easy to Operate, Automatic Backup
Legato NetWorker saves valuable time and resources by simplifying and
speeding the task of backing up and recovering files across the
network. You can schedule daily backups of an entire network to occur
automatically with the UNIX cron facility. As the backup proceeds,
NetWorker prompts you to provide tapes. Many organizations can even
run NetWorker unattended.
Fast File Recovery
File recovery is simple and fast. Just browse the on-line index of
previous backups to find the lost file. NetWorker then determines the
backup tape with the lost file, prompts the operator to mount that
tape, and executes the recovery.
Automatic Organization
Legato NetWorker labels and tracks all backup tapes. Built-in
"sanity checking" prevents costly errors, such as overwriting
unexpired backup tapes. NetWorker intelligently organizes files onto
tape. Multiple backup sets are appended one after the other to fill
each tape to its capacity. And backup sets can span multiple tapes;
NetWorker simply prompts the operator to provide as many tapes as
necessary.
Easy Status Monitoring
NetWorker provides up-to-the-minute information to administrators and
operators via a logging facility, electronic mail, or a status
monitor. The SunView-based status monitor shows at a glance that a
tape needs to be mounted, that an error has occurred, or that a
recovery is complete.
Support for Large Environments
Legato NetWorker has the capacity and performance to support the
heavier load you will inevitably face tomorrow. NetWorker can handle
even the largest backup loads. An unlimited number of client systems
can be supported on a single server or spread across multiple servers
on a network. And every administrator on the network can use
NetWorker's status monitor to receive up-to-the-minute backup
information.
High Performance
Legato NetWorker servers back up many client systems in parallel and
multiplex the files onto tape. This feature keeps a stream of files
supplied to the tape drive so it can operate at full speed. Parallel
backup operation also prevents a client from monopolizing the server.
For fast performance in large networks, the backup load can be
divided across multiple backup servers operating in parallel.
"Smart" Backup Options
You can tailor NetWorker backups on a file-by-file, client-by-client,
or network-wide basis. NetWorker options can shorten the time
required to backup, reduce the tape needed, or improve the backup.
These options include the ability to skip over selected files (such as
core files), and compress or encrypt files.
Automatic Backup Scheduling
Legato NetWorker provides a default backup schedule suitable for most
small to medium-sized networks. Administrators of more complex
networks can easily setup schedules that better suit their needs.
Schedules can span any arbitrary time period and make use of up to 11
levels of backup. Schedules can be assigned on a per client basis,
for groups of clients, or for the entire network.
