The following software was recently posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is JOAN RIFF'S "CB" SIMULATOR FOR PC NETWORKS, which is a very easy yet powerful conferencing program for PCs that are connected to a LAN. "CB" is roughly the PC LAN equivalent of "talk" or "chat", and allows many users to carry on ASCII conversations over simulated radio "airwaves". It works unchanged on just about any PC LAN. The software analogy to Citizen's Band radio makes this package particularly easy to comprehend and use. You simply fire up the program and then start typing. Everything that you type is seen on the screens of everybody else who is currently running CB, and you see on your screen everything said by all other users. There are 19 simulated "channels", to provide some compartmentalization so that everybody doesn't have to shout to be heard over the din - you can just move a conversation to another, quieter channel. You can also scramble a channel with a password, so that only another user who is currently scrambling with that same password can interpret what you are saying and vice versa. To be fair, this software *DOES* enforce registration. But three sample registration numbers are included here, to allow exhaustive evaluation of the package before it has to be registered. The manual is available in a file called CBMANUAL.ARC as a Postscript file ready for printing. That file is roughly 400K in size, and expands into a Postscript file almost 4 megabytes in size. It is making its way around the BBS circuit (and is also on CompuServe's NOVA forum as CB_PS.ARC; look for keywords "CB" and "JOANRIFF"), but is just too big to post to the net. Of course, it can also be purchased in hardcopy form. Further information is contained in this archive file CB.ARC. Bob Baumann <bob@grebyn.com> Computerwise Consulting Services P.O. Cut at the indicated lines, "cat" all three parts together *IN ORDER*, and run "uudecode" on the resultant file. You will wind up with a 90K file called CB.ARC, with the following contents: Filename Length Method Size Ratio Date Time CRC -------- ------ ------ ------ ----- ---- ---- --- CB.DOC 48192 Crunched 19324 60% 07-23-90 02:05:06 E6B3 CB.EXE 65684 Crunched 46948 29% 07-07-90 11:21:44 98C8 CB.HLP 54334 Crunched 21801 60% 07-05-90 14:21:38 D950 CB_ORDER.FRM 2942 Crunched 769 74% 07-07-90 13:11:46 981C CB_REGIS.NUM 1774 Crunched 838 53% 07-07-90 14:36:40 EE23 CB_SITE.CFG 2692 Crunched 1489 45% 07-07-90 14:41:20 6A4A CB_USER.CFG 1508 Crunched 886 42% 07-07-90 14:41:20 A3A2 ---- ------ ------ ----- 0007 177126 92055 49%
