Announcing ... Objectworks\Smalltalk, Release 4.
-- Catherine Jaeger Tucker, Product Manager

ParcPlace Systems is proud to announce Objectworks\Smalltalk, Release
4, the next release of Objectworks for Smalltalk-80.

The major new features of the release are:

% Integration with the platform windowing system -- support for
X11 Macintosh OS, and Microsoft Windows 3.0 windowing systems.

% SPIM (Smalltalk Portable Imaging Model) -- a unique facility
that leverages the graphic capabilities of your platform. For
example, filled and unfilled polygons, circular and elliptical
arcs, and wedges are now easy to draw and host fonts are
	supported.

% True color -- By defining color as RGB (red, green, blue)
triplets, you can write true color applications that take full
advantage of the most advanced color displays regardless of the
target platform. Color, greyscale, and monochrome displays are
	all supported.

% Incremental garbage collection -- has been added to the
existing suite of garbage collection facilities. Programmatic
control of the memory management policies has also been added.
Garbage collection now takes place without preempting a running
	application.

% International language support -- With a 16-bit character set
optimized to 8 bits for more efficient handling of most
	European languages.

The Release 4 documentation has been greatly enhanced. Included in the
documentation is a code conversion guide, identifying what has changed
and what is new in this release compared to version 2.5 and what is the
estimated conversion impact. A set of backward-compatibility aids have
been provided to assist in keeping your application operating while the
necessary code conversion is being performed.

Release 4 will ship in November, 1990 on the Macintosh, Sun-3,
SPARCstation, and DECstation. Versions for 80386-based and compatible
PCs under Windows 3.0, IBM RISC System/6000, HP 9000 Series 300 and
400, and Apollo 2500, 3500 and 4500 workstations will ship in the first
calendar quarter of 1991.
