PCUNIX/MO - Product Description PCUNIX/MO is a magneto-optic(MO) data storage subsystem. The MO or rewritable optic technology has matured with the guidance of an ISO spec. The MO technology offers a stable, compact, removable media that will store 650MB. The MO technology offers twice the data rate available from the DAT technology. Data retrieval is also superior to DAT technology with random media access instead of serial access. PCUNIX/MO may be used in many ways. The removable media serves well for sensitive data which must be secured when not in use. It may also be used for data transport to remote sites. CAD/CAE users will find it useful for storing large files. Health care users may archive medical records data in either textual or image formats. Commercial users may use the optic media to reduce paper reporting and recycle the media when appropriate. PCUNIX/MO may also be used in conjunction with PCUNIX/OL. PCUNIX/OL is an Optic Library that offers 20GB of storage in an autochanger unit. PCUNIX/MO may then be used at remote workstations with PCUNIX/OL serving as the hub librarian. A great deal of floor space may be recovered by converting mag tape libraries to optic media-based libraries. PCUNIX/MO is supported with both raw and block driver options. The raw driver support provides media-based directories, random access to media data, user programmatic access, and tar compatibility. The block driver supports making and mounting a filesystem on the media. All UNIX functions are supported in a completely transparent fashion. PCUNIX/MO is implemented on Santa Cruz Operation(SCO)'S UNIX 386/V Operating System. The device drivers are user-installable with SCO's custom program. The use of an intelligent controller with a 64K on-board cache maintains a high sustained data transfer rate. The basic product is a desktop unit with power supply and fan. The unit measures 12.8" wide, 4.25" in height, and 11.2" in depth. There are several choices for expanding the configuration. Two units may be stacked or a cabinet is available for multiple units. A 19" rack mount kit is also available for MILSPEC applications. The controller is Adaptec's AT/SCSI Host Adapter. It requires one full-length slot. Each controller supports up to 6 units and each host system will support up to 2 controllers. The subsystems may be connected to the host via a SCSI peripheral cable of up to six feet in length. Hewlett-Packard's name has long been synonymous with quality products. Software Horizons has selected these quality peripherals upon which to build quality software products. This combination will provide solid, dependable storage subsystems.
