[comp.newprod] Motif editions of Volumes 3 & 4 of X Window System Series

X Window System User's Guide, Motif Edition
X Toolkit Intrinsics Programming Manual, Motif Edition

Though the Open Software Foundation's Motif graphical user interface
is not strictly part of X, the two are fast becoming inseparable in
many people's minds. Like its chief competitor, Sun and AT&T's OPEN
LOOK interface, Motif is actually a specification for a user-interface
look and feel, which could theoretically be implemented with different
underlying technology. However, in its current implementation, Motif
is layered on top of X, and more specifically, on top of the X
Consortium's X Toolkit.

In response to customer demand (especially from some of our corporate
customers), we have prepared Motif-specific editions of two of our
existing books, Volume 3, The X Window System User's Guide and Volume
4, The X Toolkit Intrinsics Programming Manual. These editions are
substantially similar to the corresponding editions for the standard
MIT software (which are still available). However, they should make
it easier for those customers who are using X in conjunction with
Motif to find the information they are looking for without having to
make mental adjustments or translations based on their different
environment.

Vol. 3, X Window System User's Guide, Motif Edition

Volume 3, X Window System User's Guide, Motif Edition, orients the new
user to window system concepts and provides detailed tutorials for
many client programs, including the xterm terminal emulator and window
managers. Once you have a basic knowledge of the system, later
chapters explain how to customize the X environment and provide sample
configurations.

This new Motif Edition of the User's Guide highlights the Motif window
manager and graphical interface. It will be the first choice for the
many users with the Motif graphical user interface. The Motif Edition
has been streamlined to reflect X11 Release 4 only.

Vol. 4, X Toolkit Intrinsics Programming Manual, Motif Edition

Volume 4, X Toolkit Intrinsics Programming Manual is a complete guide
to programming with the Xt Intrinsics, the library of C language
routines created to facilitate the design of user interfaces, with
reusable components called widgets. The manual provides concepts and
examples that show how to use the various X Toolkit routines. The
first few chapters are devoted to using widgets; the remainder of the
book covers the more complex task of writing new widgets.

The new Motif edition of the Intrinsics Programming Manual has been
expanded with an overview of the Motif widget set, and uses those
widgets, rather than the MIT Athena widgets, in its examples. (Keep
in mind, though, that the primary focus of this book is still on the X
Toolkit intrinsics themselves--the toolkit layer below Motif, which is
used to implement and program with any widget set. Full details on
all the Motif widgets and the hundreds of convenience functions in the
Motif library will be provided by the forthcoming Volume 6, Motif
Programming Manual.)
