Designated the DellR Systems 212N and 320N, the new computers are based on Intel'sR 80C286, 12 megahertz (MHz) and 80386SX, 20MHz microprocessors, respectively. These lightweight, easy-to-carry systems weigh 6.4 pounds including battery and are true notebook size measuring 8.5"D x 11"W x 2"H. The Dell notebooks offer advantages over competitors' notebooks. They include Dell's exceptional new service program; a custom-designed, desktop-style keyboard with 101-key emulation; a microprocessor-controlled power management system and other power-saving features that maximize battery operating life; and Dell's Continuous Power Battery System to prevent loss of power during system operations. "The Dell SystemR 212N and Dell System 320N incorporate the latest technology in portable computing to give a strategic edge to dedicated mobile professionals and executives who are on the go," said Joel J. Kocher, senior vice president of U.S. sales and operations. "The addition of our notebook systems positions Dell to provide a complete range of affordable solutions to meet the diverse needs of the growing portable PC market." NEW SERVICE PROGRAM PROVIDES EXCEPTIONAL VALUE A unique service program has been developed by Dell to meet the specialized needs of the company's notebook customers. Included in the price of each system is a one-year, on-site service contract that provides next-day system replacement. When possible, on-site technicians will transfer existing data to the replacement unit. "With the system swap option, users can receive a replacement system allowing business efforts to be immediately resumed without extended loss of portable computing productivity," Kocher continued. "Combined with our award- winning service and support, the Dell Systems 212N and 320N offer value that is second to none in the industry." PRICING AND CONFIGURATIONS The Dell System 212N and Dell System 320N are competitively priced at $2399 and $3399, respectively. Both systems will be available in first quarter 1991. The pricing includes a 20MB IDE hard drive for the System 212N and a 30MB IDE hard drive for the System 320N. Each system also includes 1 megabyte (MB) of RAM; a 3.5-inch, 1.44MB internal diskette drive; two expansion slots for additional system memory; a dedicated expansion slot for an optional Dell data/fax modem; an AC adapter/charger; and a soft slipcase with handle and zippered cover. The Dell System 212N also comes with a 40MB IDE hard drive and a 60MB IDE hard drive is available for the Dell System 320N. 60MB hard drives are not currently offered by many competitors in the notebook market. LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN KEYBOARDS AND SCREENS FOR NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS The Dell System 212N and System 320N incorporate a custom- designed, 85-key keyboard with improved layout and key size to provide the familiar touch and feel of a desktop keyboard. The Dell notebook computers are the first in their class to offer a low-profile, 3mm keystroke that allows for easy transition between portable and office environments. The VGA LCD display offers high-quality text and graphics support for 640 x 480 resolution and measures 6.92-inches wide by 5.19-inches high and 8.6-inches diagonally. With variable screen positioning and adjustable contrast and brightness levels, this non-glare edgelight display provides maximum viewing comfort and improved readability under varied lighting conditions. POWER-SAVING FEATURES MAXIMIZE BATTERY OPERATING LIFE Each system uses an enhanced NiCad battery pack providing three to four hours of operation during normal system use. In addition, the innovative design of Dell's notebook computers provides several power-saving features to lengthen battery operating life. Both systems utilize a comprehensive, microprocessor-controlled power management system that includes a Dell-designed, custom VLSI chip to extend usable operating time. This hardware/software combination monitors system operations to balance performance needs and allocates power as required by system components. Both systems can be manually placed in stand-by mode at the simple press of a button, without losing work in memory. The stand-by button suspends all processing tasks and places the system in a low-power mode to extend battery operating life. The system will automatically enter standby-mode if the unit is closed without turning the power off; an audible signal will alert the user that the power is still on, unless the system is connected to an external keyboard or monitor. Dell's Continuous Power Battery System allows the user to replace the battery pack without leaving an application or turning off the system. A built-in reserve battery provides power to the system for a minimum of two minutes while the primary battery is being changed. Each system includes a battery life gauge that will calculate remaining battery life. The Dell Systems 212N and 320N are Dell-designed in the United States and incorporate several sliding doors to protect the I/O ports and allow for easy installation of system options and upgrades, without disassembling the unit. The LED control panel will remain in view if the system is closed during use of an external keyboard and monitor. The Dell System 212N and System 320N, as well as the direct manufacturer's complete line of affordable computer systems, can be purchased directly from Dell or through Soft Warehouse. Both sources are backed by Dell's 30-day total satisfaction guarantee, unlimited toll-free technical support and one year, on-site service contract.
