Here's an ideal opportunity to catch up on the latest research in
communication networks. The first book to address congestion control and
traffic integration in fast packet networks, Integrated Broadband
Networks describes how larger transmission bandwidths and more
sophisticated multi-media applications have created a demand for
integrated networks and how this demand has spawned new problems and
issues for the industry.

Organized into four sections, each of which presents a brief tutorial,
references, and six or seven papers, Integrated Broadband Networks
brings you up-to-date on key advances in network architectures,
switching, modeling and performance analysis, and congestion control and
traffic integration. Computer scientists and engineers will welcome this
collection of twenty-six outstanding papers painstakingly selected from
recent literature.

Section one addresses important aspects of new architectures for
integrated networks, particularly:
* Why fast packet switching is the technology of choice for
  integrated broadband networks
* Differences between the refernce model for fast packet networks
  and the traditional OSI model
* Architectural guidelines for designing integrated networks,
  including resource management
* Proposals for future networks

Section two describes advances in broadband switching, focusing on:
* The theory of broadband switches
* A survey of the current state of the art and tradeoffs among
  architectural alternatives
* Examples of switch architectures that have set the stage for a new
  era in communication networks
* The importance of queueing structures to switch performance

Section three explains the characteristics of traffic types that will be
carried by integrated networks, stressing:
* The need for new modeling techniques for these different traffic types
* Characteristics of packetized voice, framed-data and constant bit-
rate traffic in the fast packet environment
* Analysis techniques for statistically multiplexed traffic
* Applications of modeling techniques in evaluating architectural
alternatives

Section four presents the latest research on congestion control and
traffic integration, in particular:
* The phenomenon of congestion in packet networks, its causes and
  effects
* Algorithms for congestion control in fast packet networks
* Traffic integration by management of bandwidth and buffer
  resources
