NOVELL ANNOUNCES NEW RELEASE OF NETWARE
20, 100 AND 250-User Pricing Offered With Release of NetWare v3.11
BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 11, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., developer
of NetWare systems software products today announced NetWare v3.11, a new
release of its network operating system product line for enterprise
computing. NetWare v3.11 is based on a systems architecture for network
computing services, Novell's Integrated Computing Architecture (NICA),
which is designed to provide integration of heterogeneous desktops and
other computing environments.
By integrating heterogeneous computing environments, NetWare v3.11 allows
DOS, Windows, Macintosh, OS/2 and UNIX computer users to transparently
share information and resources. NetWare v3.11 allows any of these
desktop computers to share file and print services and access information
on IBM mainframes. NetWare v3.11 also supports the integration of
NetWare networks into networking environments based on Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Open Systems
Interconnection (OSI).
Highlights of the NetWare v3.11 announcement are:
-o- Enhanced client services for DOS, Windows, Macintosh, OS/2 and
Network File System (NFS)-based UNIX desktops provide seamless
integration with the NetWare environment.
-o- Enhanced internetworking facilities, such as support of TCP/IP, the
defacto standard protocol for multivendor internetworking, are
included with the product.
-o- NetWare v3.11 offers customers the ability to participate in a
network environment based on the United States' Government OSI
Profile (GOSIP), version 1.0.
-o- Integrated support for IBM NetView allows network managers to
monitor a NetWare server from a NetView management console.
-o- Enhanced backup and restore options include support for all
desktops and more than 50 third-party hardware backup devices.
-o- New configuration options include 20- and 100-user versions in
addition to the standard 250-user configuration.
MULTICLIENT DESKTOP SUPPORT
With NetWare v3.11, support for Macintosh and many UNIX workstations is
now available through optional NetWare Loadable Modules (NLM) products:
NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 and NetWare NFS v1.0. The NetWare v3.11
Universal File System provides full support for file systems based on
DOS/Windows, OS/2 High-Performance File System (HPFS), Macintosh, NFS and
File Transfer, Access and Management (FTAM).
NetWare v3.11 enhanced client services for OS/2, Windows and DOS are as
follows:
-o- The NetWare Requester for OS/2 v1.3 adds support for diskless OS/2
workstations, OS/2 HPFS long-name and extended-attribute-aware
utilities, increased Named Pipes connections (up to 255), faster
SPX performance and a new Presentation Manager-based installation
utility.
-o- NetWare Windows 3.0 support has been enhanced to include Named
Pipes support and the ability to switch between DOS network
applications within the Windows environment.
-o- NetWare DOS enhancements include the DOS Shell v3.02, which
provides bug fixes and improved file caching, as well as new DOS
ODI LAN drivers.
INTERCONNECTIVITY THROUGH TCP/IP
NetWare v3.11 includes TCP/IP, a defacto standard protocol for fast,
reliable interconnectivity between heterogeneous computing environments.
The TCP/IP transport support in NetWare v3.11 provides the following
capabilities:
-o- IP tunneling of IPX packets, which allows NetWare subnetworks to be
joined across a TCP/IP internetwork. DOS, Windows and OS/2 NetWare
clients can access NetWare servers across TCP/IP internetworks.
-o- Routing of IP packets across Ethernet, Token-Ring and Arcnet LAN
adapters configured in the server to support TCP/IP. This allows
LAN WorkPlace and NFS workstations to access TCP/IP computer
systems throughout a TCP/IP internetwork.
-o- Support for multiple industry-standard application program
interfaces (APIs), which allow developers to write TCP/IP-fluent
NLM server applications. APIs supported include Berkeley 4.3
Socket Library, the AT&T UNIX System V Streams/TLI interface and
the Sun Microsystems/NetWise Remote Procedure Call (RPC) interface.
-o- Network management -- Novell's TCP/IP features an SNMP (Simple
Network Management Protocol) agent, allowing NetWare v3.11 TCP/IP
protocols to be administered by any network monitoring device that
employs SNMP with standard MIB support. A TCP/IP Console NLM is
included to monitor and configure the TCP/IP protocol stack via
SNMP. The same console application can be used to monitor and
configure any other NetWare v3.11 server (or standard IP router)
from the server console via SNMP.
INTERCONNECTIVITY THROUGH OSI
Through the optional NetWare FTAM v1.0, NetWare v3.11 can interoperate
with OSI-based computing environments. This allows NetWare v3.11 to
support GOSIP 1.0 requirements. NetWare FTAM also allows Map v3.0 and
GOSIP clients to share NetWare printing services.
NETVIEW READY
NetWare v3.11 provides an Entry Point interface to IBM's NetView. SNA
and NetView network-management-agent NLMs enable NetWare v3.11's built-in
management services to send Token-Ring and Token-Ring/Logical Link
Control (LLC) alerts, as defined by IBM, to the NetView management
console. In addition, NetWare v3.11 supports NetView requests for
maintenance statistics. These NetView alerts and commands can be sent to
and from single- or multiple-ring networks via an SNA session established
between NetWare v3.11 and the NetView host.
ENHANCED BACKUP
NetWare v3.11 includes a new backup/restore NLM utility, SBACKUP, which
supports multiple-server backup and restore of the NetWare Universal File
System, including all new name spaces (OS/2 HPFS, NFS and FTAM). New
device drivers, developed for Novell by Cheyenne Software, Inc., are also
included with NetWare v3.11, supporting more than 50 third-party hardware
backup devices. An optional backup device driver kit adds support for
more than 100 additional third-party devices for backup/restore support.
TESTING AND CERTIFICATION
Novell has done comprehensive testing to certify compatibility between
NetWare v3.11 and many hardware and software products that can be
integrated into the NetWare environment. More than 100 backup, LAN,
server and disk subsystems for NetWare v3.11 have been tested and
certified through Novell's Independent Manufacturer's Support Program
(IMSP).
In addition to IMSP testing, Novell conducted rigorous testing of a
number of complete system configurations typically found in customer
installations. This configuration testing, which includes servers, LAN
adapters, disk subsystems, NLMs and application software, allows Novell
to advise customers on the interoperability and reliability of specific
systems solutions.
PRICING, AVAILABILITY AND UPDATES
NetWare v3.11 will be available in March 1991. Pricing in the United
States and Canada is U.S. $3,495 for the 20-user version, U.S. $6,995
