HP INTRODUCES 17-PPM HP LASERJET PRINTER WITH RESOLUTION
ENHANCEMENT TECHNOLOGY AND PCL 5 FOR $5,495
March 4, 1991 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced its fastest and
most advanced 300 dots-per-inch (dpi) desktop printer for the business
office -- the 17 pages-per-minute (ppm) HP LaserJet IIISi printer with
Resolution Enhancement technology and the HP PCL 5 printer language.
At $5,495 (U.S. list), the new printer features two 500-sheet input trays
and superior print quality resulting from new toner available exclusively
for the HP LaserJet IIISi printer. A RISC-based formatter enables the
printer to scale type and produce mixed text and graphics at or near the
printer's rated engine speed.
Options include integrated Adobe PostScript, a duplex printing mechanism,
and high-performance Token Ring or Ethernet network-printer interfaces for
Novell NetWare and 3 Com 3+Open network operating systems.
Improved Print Quality
----------------------
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer uses new microfine toner which, in
combination with HP's Resolution Enhancement technology, produces print
quality comparable to that of many higher resolution printers. Microfine
toner creates images from toner particles approximately half the size of
other 300-dpi laser-printer toner, resulting in sharper edges and less
toner scatter.
Microfine-toner cartridges for the HP LaserJet IIISi printer are $169 (U.S.
list) and print up to 8,000 pages.
Advanced Paper Handling
-----------------------
HP's research into customers' needs indicates that customers rate advanced
paper-handling capabilities second only to print speed.
To meet those needs, the HP LaserJet IIISi printer is designed to output up
to 50,000 pages per month and comes standard with two 500-sheet letter-size
paper-input trays for a total input capacity of 1,000 sheets.
A 500-sheet output bin is built into the top of the printer for correct-
order, face-down output. A reverse-order, face-up output tray that holds
up to 50 sheets also is standard and can be accessed through software.
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer can offset print jobs up to 1 inch for easy
location of individual documents in the output tray. To avoid paper jams
and prevent paper overflows, users who do large volumes of batch processing
can activate a tray-full sensor on the 500-sheet output bin.
Customers can choose two additional paper-handling features, available as
accessories for the HP LaserJet IIISi printer:
- A duplex (two-sided) printing mechanism can be installed by the
customer or an HP-authorized dealer ($695 U.S. list). The mechanism
allows users to select duplex or simplex (one-sided) printing from the
printer's front control panel or from the PC.
- A power envelope feeder ($495 U.S. list) holds up to 100 envelopes and
plugs directly into the front of the printer without cables. The
envelope feeder serves as a third input source; there is not need to
remove one of the paper-input trays.
More Memory
-----------
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer comes standard with 1 Mbyte of printer memory
and four single in-line memory module (SIMM) slots. Customers can purchase
additional 1- or 4-Mbyte SIMMs to expand the printer's memory up to 17
Mbytes (1 Mbyte resident plus four 4-Mbyte SIMMs).
SIMM memory accessories for the HP LaserJet IIISi printer are $169 for 1
Mbyte and $499 for 4 Mbytes (U.S. list).
More Typefaces
--------------
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer has four resident scalable typeface families:
CG Times, Univers and Univers Condensed in medium, medium italic, bold and
bold italic; and Zapf Dingbats. Additionally, the printer includes 14
bitmap fonts that are standard in other HP LaserJet printers.
All of HP's disk and cartridge-based MasterType Library products can be
used with the HP LaserJet IIISi, including the scalable-typeface cartridge
collections used with HP LaserJet III and IIID printers.
HP PCL 5 and Optional, Fully Integrated Adobe PostScript
--------------------------------------------------------
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer is the third HP LaserJet printer to feature
HP's PCL 5 printer language. HP PCL 5 features built-in HP-GL/2 vector
graphics and Intellifont font-scaling technology for on-the-fly scaling
from one-quarter to 999.75 points in quarter-point increments.
Customers can also choose PostScript as an option that is fully integrated
into the printer's design and offers 35 scalable Adobe (Type 1) typefaces
and Adobe's ATM (Adobe Type Manager) font-rendering technology.
Customers can order PostScript as a factory-installed printer option or as
a dealer-installed upgrade to the printer. The HP LaserJet IIISi printer
with factory-installed PostScript and a total of 2 Mbytes of printer memory
is $6,595 (U.S. list); the dealer-installed PostScript is $895 (U.S. list).
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer supports software-selectable language
switching between HP PCL 5 and PostScript; these selections also can be
made from the printer's front panel.
PostScript requires 2 Mbytes of printer memory for printing on letter- or
legal-size paper. Duplex printing with PostScript requires 4 Mbytes of
printer memory.
Warranty and Availability
-------------------------
The HP LaserJet IIISi printer includes a one-year, on-site warranty and is
available today from HP-authorized dealers and HP's direct sales force.
The power envelope feeder is expected to be available during the summer of
1991. All other accessories, including the dealer-installed PostScript
upgrade kit, are available today.
The factory-installed PostScript version of the printer is expected to be
available in the summer of 1991.

HP INTRODUCES NETWORK-PRINTER INTERFACE CARDS
FOR NEW HP LASERJET IIISi PRINTER
March 4, 1991 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced four optional
network-printer interfaces that enable the new HP LaserJet IIISi printer,
also introduced today, to connect directly anywhere on a local-area network
(LAN).
The interfaces are designed for Ethernet or Token Ring networks running
Novell NetWare or the 3Com 3+Open version of LAN Manager. The network-
printer interface cards can be installed easily in a slot located at the
rear of the printer.
Location Flexibility
--------------------
With the appropriate interface card installed, the HP LaserJet IIISi
printer can be connected directly to a network where the printer is most
accessible to users. The location flexibility eliminates the need for a
physical connection between the printer and a file server, which is often
in a location inconvenient for printer users.
No additional cables, software, PC's or hardware boxes are required to
connect an interface to the network or HP LaserJet IIISi printer.
Improved Performance on a LAN
-----------------------------
The nework-printer interfaces process inbound data at more than 160,000
bytes/s -- up to 15 times faster than the typical parallel interface can
receive. With faster data transfer from the network, the HP LaserJet IIISi
printer can output even graphics-intensive documents at or near the
printer's 17 pages-per-minute engine speed.
The interfaces also reduce the load that network printing places on a file
server because they transfer data in large blocks. By comparison, parallel
interfaces transmit one byte of data at a time. LAN performance is
improved overall with the network interfaces because of the faster
communication between the server and printer.
Better Network Diagnostics
--------------------------
The interfaces provide printer diagnostic information to network-
administration utilities, such as Novell's COMCHECK. The interfaces also
collect network statistics and networkwide error messages, which can be
referenced on the printer's self-test page.
U.S. List Prices and Availability
---------------------------------
The interfaces are available today from HP-authorized dealers. The
Ethernet interfaces are $695 and the Token Ring interfaces are $795. The
Token Ring interfaces run at 4 or 16 Mbits/s.
