Secure Tape Interface(tm)
Secure Tape Interface(tm) (STI) is a tape management system for Ultrix
and AIX/370, which allows you a great deal of flexability in the way
you manage your computing environment. By including an X-windows
interface, a curses interface, and a direct command interface, STI can
be used from any terminal at any time. Unlike many other tape
management systems, STI will not upset your existing tape environment.
You can still use any pre-existing (or future) tape application, even
if you choose to put ANSI standard ASCII or EBCDIC labels on your
tapes.
These are some of the features included with STI:
o Automatic selection of drives for mounting of tapes.
o The ability to use these labeled tapes by ANY existing or future
UNIX application (tar, dump, restore, cpio, etc.)
o Secure channels for accessing the tapes according to UNIX style
permission modes.
o User-definable names for accessing mounted tapes.
o Verification of tape mounts according to ANSI/IBM label matching.
o Archiving of files using this secure interface.
o Retrieval of archived files using filename/filedate pairs.
o Librarian functions which keep track of what data is on which tape.

This was posted a while ago, when it was only available for Ultrix
and AIX/370. It is now available on most UNIX platforms.
