ISLAND GRAPHICS AND UNISOL ANNOUNCE PORTING AND DISTRIBUTION OF KANJI VERSIONS OF ISLAND WRITE, DRAW & PAINT "Japanized" Versions of Island's Best Selling UNIX Desktop Publishing Package To Be Ported to Several Workstation Platforms with OSF/Motif San Rafael, California. April 12, 1991 -- Island Graphics Corporation and Unisol Corporation announced today that Unisol is creating localized Kanji versions of Island's best selling UNIX desktop publishing package, Island Write, Draw & Paint. Unisol is creating the "Japanized" versions of both versions of Island's X Windows-based Island Write, Draw & Paint -- it is creating OpenWindows/Kanji versions for Sun Microsystems workstations, and it is creating Motif/Kanji versions for Sun, HP/Apollo, and DEC workstations. The companies also announced that Unisol has exclusive worldwide master distribution rights for the Kanji versions, and the exclusive Japanese distribution rights for Island's English versions on Sun workstations. The Kanji/OpenWindows version of Island Write, Draw & Paint will become available in May. Unisol originally translated Island's SunView/OPEN LOOK version of Write, Draw & Paint into Japanese, and has been distributing it through a wide range of OEMs, including Fujitsu, Toshiba, C. Itoh Techno Science, Fuji Xerox and others since April of 1990. "Write, Draw & Paint is easier to use than any desktop publishing software product on the market today in Japan," said Michael Takahisa, director of the marketing and sales department for Unisol. "With Island Graphics' expertise in developing easy-to-use UNIX desktop publishing software, and our ability to customize software quickly and distribute it to the Japanese marketplace, we have an unbeatable combination." "The response to Unisol's first Kanji port of Write, Draw and Paint on Suns has been very strong from the beginning," said Dan Remer, Island's president. "Since our first port, the demand for powerful word processing and desktop publishing tools on all workstation platforms in Japan has grown. Together with Unisol, we are responding to that demand by making Write, Draw and Paint available for the first time on Japanese workstation platforms that run Motif." Write, Draw & Paint Write, Draw & Paint provides easy-to-use WYSIWYG desktop publishing tools for engineers, managers and administrative staff. It is the best-selling UNIX desktop publishing program, according to Dataquest, and earned a 1989 UnixWorld Product of the Year award. It also won Sun Observer's 1990 Best Word Processing Product award. Write comes with a set of professionally-designed document templates that provide users with pre-designed layouts. Import and export features allow documents created in Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, FrameMaker, and Interleaf to keep their formatting as they are imported into Write. Draw and Paint let users illustrate their documents with original art, scanned images, organization charts, maps and diagrams. CGM graphics like Lotus 1-2-3 graphs and HPGL graphics such as AutoCAD plots can be imported into Draw, edited and annotated with text. Draw also lets users convert clip-art from PostScript and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) formats and edit them. Paint supports the industry-standard TIFF file format. It also provides conversions to and from Sun Raster, MacPaint, GIF, Group 3 FAX, X Bitmap and X Window Dump formats. Each program provides output to PostScript and HP LaserJet printers. Pricing, Availability and Support Pricing for the Japanized Island Write, Draw & Paint will be approximately $1600. The Kanji versions require the Japanese Language environment in the operating system. Unisol's number is 813-3288-2731. Island's toll-free number is 1-800-255-4499.
