CONTROL DATA ADDS THREE NEW 33 MHz SYSTEMS TO ITS 4000 SERIES COMPUTER LINE MINNEAPOLIS, April 2, 1991---Control Data Corporation's Computer Products Group today announced the addition of three new products to its 4000 series computer line. The new models - a deskside server, an entry level desktop server, and a high performance workstation - are based on a 33 MHz MIPS R3000A RISC processor, and are binary compatible with other models in the 4000 series. "The new 33 MHz products provide a 35 to 85 percent improvement in performance over our previous desktop and deskside offerings," said Chuck Horton, product marketing manager for Control Data. "The introduction of these new products gives our customers more choices in both price and performance levels. The 33 MHz systems allow us to offer our customers products that are among the most powerful desktop and deskside systems available today." The products are available from Control Data immediately. The 4350 server is a multiuser deskside server with VME expansion capabilities. It offers large system capabilities in a compact package, and provides considerably higher performance at roughly the same price as Control.Data's predecessor 4340 system. The 4330-330, an entry-level server, is an enhanced version of Control Data's current 25 MHz 4330 server. Control Data also announced a high-performance workstation, the 4320-330, which offers expanded capabilities over Control Data's current 25 MHz 4320 workstation. The company is reducing the price of its 25 MHz 4330 server and 4320 workstation products. The 4350 server is suitable for use in small to medium-sized work groups and offers many features typically found in higher-end systems, but at a more competitive price. The 4350 offers 31.5 SPECmarks of performance, and is priced starting at $30,350. The base configuration includes 16 MB of ECC memory, a SCSI controller, and an Ethernet controller. The system may be expanded up to 128 MB of ECC memory, 3 GB of disk storage in the main cabinet, and up to 11 GB with an expansion cabinet . High performance I/O expansion capabilities are provided via an industry-standard VME bus. The entry-level 4330-330 server offers excellent price/performance and expandability. The base configuration starts at $9,640, delivers 25.1 SPECmarks of performance, and supports 8 to 128 MB of memory and up to 6 GB of disk capacity. The 4330-330 is ideally suited for use in small work groups as a departmental data management system or as a first level server in a network of heterogeneous computers. The 4320-330 is a desktop workstation that provides 25.1 SPECmarks of computational performance and world class X--windows graphics capabilities. It is ideal for developing and delivering a wide variety of X-based applications. Memory sizes to 128MB are available, and disk capacities up to 6 Gbytes are supported. A choice of high resolution monochrome and color monitors are also available. The 4330-330 will be available from Control Data at a base price of $11,290. The new 33 MHz systems are supported by EP/IX, Control Data's enhanced version of the UNIX operating system. EP/IX offers the kind of performance and robust functionality usually found only in proprietary operating systems. The products announced today, when coupled with ORACLE, INFORMIX, BASISplus, or other leading data management products, provide excellent data management capabilities for small to mid-size organizations. Control Data offers a comprehensive set of networking and integration products that allow these new systems to be easily integrated into an existing computer network. Control Data also offers a number of unique products which can be packaged with these systems to satisfy specific customer requirements, including AWBUS, an automated workstation backup system; EDL, which manages data in a complex, multi-vendor, distributed environment; EZview, a user-friendly graphical user interface; and ASCENT, a suite of products that enhance user productivity by providing easy access to data in a complex environment. The company also offers EXPRESS Link, a high performance connection to CYBER mainframes that allows CYBER users to access applications and data on Control Data 4000 systems. These applications are among the more than 1,000 applications available on Control Data's 4000 series computers, including industry- leading packages such as SAS, Framemaker, SPSS, Uniplex, and IMSL Math Libraries.
