NEW SECURITY AND TRACKING PROGRAM FOR THE APPLE MACINTOSH ARLINGTON, MA, APRIL 24, 1991 - Eclectic Associates, Inc, today announced public availability of a new Apple Macintosh security and resource tracking product. The product, which allows only authorized users access to Apple Macintosh computers, also features resource tracking capability to monitor printer usage. Authenticator V2.0 addresses both the need to protect computer files and restrict the costly over-use of printers, particularly laser printers. It was designed specifically for open working environments where multiple users have access to a Macintosh computer system, such as businesses, laboratories, libraries, service bureaus, and academic communities. "Authenticator puts a 'lock' on each computer, allowing access only to authorized users with assigned 'keys'," says David Kovar, president of Eclectic Associates, Inc. "Equally important, it keeps a secure record of who is using each Macintosh and how many pages they printed on printers attached either locally or via a network." "While people frequently recognize the need to protect data, they often overlook the need to protect against abuse of their resources, such as printers," Kovar adds. "Printers are very costly to run, especially when people use them indiscriminately as copy machines." Authenticator provides a record keeping process that gives a manager critical information on how resources are being used and us invaluable for budget planning and chargeback purposes. "In today's economic environment monitoring and reducing unnecessary costs is a necessity, not an option," Kovar notes. Eclectic Associates, Inc. originally developed Authenticator for Harvard University's Graduate School of Design to secure their computers, Authenticator is licensed from Harvard by Eclectic Associates, Inc. Authenticator comes with a second part, the Administrator, which is the maintenance application. This allows a system manager to maintain the password files and systems configuration. Authenticator runs under System 6.0 or greater and is compatible with System 7.0. It requires approximately 90K of disk space and 60K of RAM when running. Administrator requires approximately 90K of disk space and 256K of RAM when running. Cost for a single copy of Authenticator is $120. Orders of 10 copies or more are discounted by 10 percent.
