NEW DIGITAL RESEARCH MULTIUSER DOS OFFERS
COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE TO UNIX, LANs

MONTEREY, CA, --Digital Research Inc. recently announced Digital
Research Multiuser DOS, a new multiuser, multitasking operating
system. The product offers a cost-effective alternative to other
multiuser operating systems such as UNIX and Xenix, as well as to
local area networks.

DR Multiuser DOS replaces Digital Research's Concurrent DOS 386 and
incorporates technology from that product and from DR DOS 5.0. The
new product reflects Digital Research's position as the premier vendor
of PC-based DOS operating systems.

DR Multiuser DOS enables a single 386SX, 386 or 486-based computer to
host multiple DOS applications and multiple multitasking users on
terminals and PCs linked through a standard serial port connection.
The operating system provides the advantages of a LAN at a fraction of
the cost, with installation and ongoing administration both greatly
simplified.

"For small, transaction-oriented workgroups and file-intensive
applications, DR Multiuser DOS is the most effective, economical
solution on the market," said Dick Williams, Digital Research
president and CEO. "A 10-user system, for example, could save a
company more than 50 percent of a LAN's hardware costs." Unlike
multiuser UNIX platforms, DR Multiuser DOS enables businesses to
retain their investment in standard DOS application packages, such as
accounting, database management, spreadsheets and word processing,
while providing a productive workgroup environment for sharing
information and hardware resources.

High-performance, multiple sessions DR Multiuser DOS supports a wide
variety of terminals, as well as PCs running an emulation program
included with the package. The number of users supported is limited
only by the number of ports available and the need to maintain an
adequate response time--up to a maximum of 64 users.

Maximum performance is attained through the use of disk caching and a
technique called (Dynamic) Idle Detection System (patent pending),
which ensures that idle tasks do not tie up the processor. The
facility can even free the CPU between a user's keystrokes. DR
Multiuser DOS can support three users simply by connecting terminals
to the standard COM1 and COM2 ports, or 10 users using the default
menu selections for several popular 8-port serial multiport cards.
The operating system also includes drivers for 8-port and 16-port
intelligent cards and can support drivers for cards with up to 64
ports.

The new operating system supports color text and CGA graphics on
connected terminals and PCs that support color graphics. It offers a
robust security facility, with the option to enforce user passwords
and secure disk media. Users can access CD-ROM devices, making DR
Multiuser DOS the most cost-effective multiuser data retrieval system
available. DR Multiuser DOS uses sophisticated memory management
techniques, based on technology developed for Digital Research
Concurrent DOS 386 and DR DOS 5.0, to move most of the operating
system, resident programs, and device drivers out of the 640K memory
region. As a result, more than 570K of memory is available to each
DOS application. The operating system supports up to eight sessions
on every console. Each session is independent of the others--a user
can even reboot (using CTR-ALT-DEL) without affecting the other
sessions. All sessions support graphics mode on the host PC console.
On connected color terminals or PCs with color monitors, this feature
can be used for text-based applications that have a graphics
component--such as the page previewer in WordPerfect or the graphics
display within Lotus 1-2-3. All sessions can also share the same
mouse, with the pointer position maintained on each.

Price/Availability:
DR Multiuser DOS is priced at $695, and is available now.
