Richard Brown's comments about extended usage of Social Security numbers in the US also applies to the use of Social Insurance Numbers (SIN numbers) in Canada. We were originally told that the numbers would be used exclusively for social insurance purposes but now they are used routinely by employers and every one else. It is not surprising our governments have little to say about other countries use of identity cards since both here and in the US they have been introduced through the back door (so to speak) without much resistance-in Canada at least.
