I write this in an effort to spur "conversation" in the Computers and Society Digest forums, throughout the networks. What are the hot topics? Privacy: There was a "scare" piece in The Business Week, 4 Sept. 1989 "Is Anything Private?" Viruses: There is an inflamatory book published in 1989: Mcafee and Haynes, "Computer viruses, Worms, Data Diddlers, Killer Programs and Other Threats to Your System." AI: Scientific American (Jan. 1990) has a debate between Searle and the Churchlands. Communications of the ACM has Dijkstra on teaching computer science. General Overview: William Joel has outlined a course on computers and society in the Newsletter of SIGSOC (ACM) If you are interested in discussing any of these topics, please do so within the current forum...
