I've been reading the material in this newsgroup for about a half a year, and have seen all sorts of various mumblings about this machine and that, but I have yet to see any real opinions on what people want workstations/personal-environments to be able to do. Everyone who has any kind of association with these beasts has some notion of ultimate workstation, the one which they would love to use. Please mail me a partial/full list of the characteristics you would have in your workstation. In about 10 days I'll summarize the replies and then we can all have a good argument. From: Jim Celoni S.J. <CSL.JLH.Celoni@SU-SCORE.ARPA> We're shopping for a workstation to be the front and back end for programs to solve differential equations of fluid dynamics--to accept descriptions of regions (using a mouse or tablet) and to display solutions in color--to reside on Stanford's 3MB Ethernet. A 256K 68000 system w/ 800x1000 pixel resolution and hardware graphics assist (e.g. BitBlt) without local disk would be fine, but these aren't requirements. What's available? I'd welcome info on possible units (e.g. SGI iris, 3 Rivers color Perq) & their specs (processor, memory, graphics hardware & software, price (under $30K), ...); I'll summarize responses for the net if there's interest. Incidentally, is Logitech's LogiMouse the most accurate (380 ppi), and how much more precise is a good digital tablet? Thanks. +j -------

With respect to the `Silicon Rain Forest' (the Washington-Oregon High Tech area is being called this....) - do workstations from this area use slugs instead of mice? Mats
