[comp.society] How to measure racism?

BSWAIN@UA1VM.BITNET (Bill Swain) (11/27/90)

[from CRTNET , Number 287, November 25, 1990]

A group of Ph.D. students currently taking a survey research seminar
together is considering a research project to construct a survey
questionnaire that will measure the degree of racism observed,
experienced and practiced by a given population with as little
interference as possible from the emotional nature of the topic. The
project, if undertaken, will involve (a) constructing and testing the
questionnaire, and (b) using the questionnaire in a telephone survey of
a population, probably in Alabama. Ideas and suggestions concerning
this project idea will be welcome from any quarter; for example, ideas
concerning organization or subdivision of the questionnaire, question
construction and formats (e.g., appropriate word pairs for semantic
differential scales), questions that will gather ordinal, interval or
ratio data.

Responses may be sent to Bill Swain, Office of Marketing, College
of Continuing Studies, The University of Alabama, Box 870388,
Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0388, or by electronic mail to BSWAIN@UA1VM.BITNET

Thank you.
