[Originally from CRTNET 288, Dec 10, 1990] The recently established academic journal, TEXT, DRUGS, AND ROCK- N-ROLL, invites papers, essays, book reviews, poetry, letters, and any previously unknown written forms concerned with all aspects of popular culture for publication in the premier issue. The lead article of this interdisciplinary journal will be Lawrence Grossberg's "On Rock and Power" (University of Illinois). Also included will be an analysis of rap music by Todd Boyd (University of Iowa). This periodical will focus on various popular entertainment forms, cultural artifacts, and social rituals from the perspective of interpretive theory and criticism. Possible topic areas include film and television studies, leisure studies, and critical analyses of texts such as comic books, industrial music, mud wrestling, ethnic costumes, advertising, Southern barbecue, fax machines, electric razors, skateboards, and fundamentalist architecture. We welcome creativity not only in choices of texts for discursive analysis, but also in forms of intellectual expression. Manuscripts should be prepared according to whatever format best serves the purpose of the document. Student submissions are encouraged and should be noted as such. Please send three copies of submissions to the editor: Ben Attias, Forum for Cultural Research, Department of Communication Studies, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242 (O:319-335-0584, H:319- 337-5222), Bitnet <BATTIAPA@UIAMVS>. For book review submissions send three copies to the Book Review Editor: Glenn C. Getz, Department of Rhetoric, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242 (319-339-0131) Bitnet <ASTGCGWY@UIAMVS>.
