    Thanks to several people who responded to my post about a ball-point mouse;
    what I'm looking for is a mouse that LOOKS like a pen (stylus-shaped).
    It seems to me that this would be a much better way to input drawings.

An SRI group makes a force-sensitive pen that is used for signature
analysis.  I believe it measures forces in x, y, and z directions;
I assume that it also measures x-y position.  This input device would
allow an artist considerably more freedom in sketching and "brush
stroking" than does a mouse.

There is a whole industry that makes such devices; they are called ``digitizer tablets''. Visit any computer store that serves the CAD/CAM market.
