[net.news.group] net.psych

Gee, I thought I'd made a good case for net.psych, being able to
site many instances where it would have been used if it had exist
(ie, `Time Perception', `Why Suicide?', `Clinical Depression',
`Electroshock Therapy', etc -- these are articles which have appeared
in various newsgroups over the past few months).

I forgot the (lengthy) `Coca-cola thought experiment', and various
articles therefrom discussing addictions.

So I don't feel that net.psych is `yet another low-volume newsgroup'
-- psychology is one of many popular issues for which a stable forum
is desirable; indeed, look at the popularity of `Psychology Today',
radio shrinks and sex therapists, and the debate over psychiatric
testimony in the courts!

net.psych would appeal not only to pop psychology issues, but perhaps
be a place where people can learn stuff about how the mind (oops,
sorry, Dr Skinner) works, and what motivates behavior.

Thank you for your attention.

Gordon does have a point (See, I don't always disagree with you! :->) that
there have been a number of psych oriented discussion floating over the net.
My REAL disagreement with net.psych is that I think that the net needs to
start using subtopics a little more intelligently. I have been talking about
creating two new main topics for a while, net.sci and net.cs. There has been
mild support for both, but nothing really strong enough to justify their
creation.

What I would LIKE to see is net.sci created, and net.sci.psych created as a
sub topic if people feel it really deserves its own group. This gives us a
good basis for eventually taking all of the main level topics that should
be sub-topics and figuring out how to move them. If we keep creating top
level topics for everything we'll never get a handle on it and the net will
continue to increase in complexity and become unwieldy.

here's to reducing complexity in everyday life!

Half asleep I hear a voice; is it only in my mind?
Or is it someone calling me, someone I failed and left behind?

Yet another vote for net.psych...
There are enough people interested so can we do it?

This discussion of net.psych is interesting. (By the way, if someone counts
votes, I'm for it.) A few months ago, I put out an inquiry on net.news.group
or net.news about why there wasn't a psychology-oriented newsgroup. This
was due to my wanting to post an inquiry appropriate to such a group.
(That was the start of the now-famous Time Perception discussion, by the by.
[He takes a bow as the applause wells up...]) Anyway, there was NO response
to that posting, so I put the Time Perception query out on net.misc.

Maybe this is evidence in favor of the often-expressed opinion that people
should post articles first and ask for groups afterwards. We now use
the Time Perception and other topical discussions as evidence to support
a net.psych.
