From: JRBRINKEMA@USC-ISI.ARPA I am investigating the use of Touch Tone (r) phones to enter ALPHAnumeric data into a computer (in particular keys for data base queries-by-name.) Does anyone know of any standards for such use of the phones; or does anyone have any experience with (or comments on) same. tia. jb

From: Dan Franklin <dan@BBN-LABS-B.ARPA> I know of one "standard" that was used by a couple of projects within Bell Labs while I was there. Each character is indicated by two keypresses. First you press the key containing the letter or digit you want; then you press a second key "in the direction of" the particular letter you want. So if you wanted A, you would first press the "2" key, then "1" (because "A" is the leftmost letter of the three). G would be indicated by pressing 4 twice, H by 4-5, and so on. I don't remember how they indicated digits, but you could do that by following the initial key with 0.
