[comp.protocols.misc] Connecting Ethernets Via Microwave?

jsloan@wright.EDU (John Sloan) (05/21/87)

We are looking at connecting our main campus baseband coax ethernet
with a similar ethernet at a research park via microwave. The distance
involved appears to be about five miles. We do have a line of sight.
We have a microwave tower at the main campus, but nothing yet on the
other end. We are in the processes of having a site survey done. There
are a few towers along the way which could be used as relays, although
the cost of duplicating the necessary equipment is of course very
high.

We are running TCP/IP and DECnet on our ethernet and are likely
to have machines which speak both at either end. We are also using
ND and NFS. Although it may be convenient to be able to do remote
file mounts across the microwave, it is not clear that it will be
necessary or desirable.

We would like to invite anyone (including vendors) to share their
experience with such a setup with us. If you email directly to my
address shown below, and there is enough interest, I would be more than
happy to summarize for the net at large. I've read that ethernet via
microwave is a real management and technical nightmare, so horror
stories are invited too.

Thanks in advance!
