[comp.protocols.misc] OSI Protocol Software Wanted

n2dsy@hou2d.UUCP (J.BEATTIE) (06/19/87)

A week or so ago I put a message on the net looking for source
code for a small PC or Unix OSI protocol stack. I am happy to
say that several folks responded to me. I'm sorry to report
that they chose to do it privately...

WHAT'S WITH YOU GUYS ?

Don't get me wrong, I am thankful for the responses...and I
would love to hear from other folks who may have stuff to offer

 - even a single protocol layer contribution is of interest...

What I guess I'm frustrated about is that I chose a title of
"OSI Protocol Software" which spurred several people into
action, but...

MOST of the "respondents" who used the title were:

1. Interested in pushing Internet,
2. CCITT/ISO/COS/OSI bashing, and
3. NOT CONTRIBUTING to the request.

To them I should probably not say much more on the subject
(other than what is above), because I try to remain a
gentleman even when I disagree...

NOW...
What was in the original request ?

In summary:

I am interested in seeing OSI protocols in general use.
A subset of these protocols is being assembled for the PC
clones...but we want to have a good selection of
implementations at each layer...so if you have something or
know of implementations LET ME KNOW !

WHY ?

We are going to circulate a public domain (no profit a la
Columbia University's Kermit) OSI stack for the PC. We'll
give it plenty of use where ever we can...specfically in
Amateur Radio Packet Networks and in the Freeware/Shareware
landline Internet and BBS worlds.

We feel that this approach will help popularize and refine OSI
protocols.

Thanks,
