[comp.protocols.misc] DECNET vs. tcp-ip?

jdp@killer.UUCP (Jim Pritchett) (05/18/88)

     Hello,
I am posting this request for a friend without net.access. Please
respond by Email since I dont usually frequent all of the newsgroups on this
message.

Could someone out there please provide me with a list of the relevant
pros and cons of using DECNET vs. tcp-ip? The current hardware involved is a
VAX 8800 network (DECNET), some MicroVAXen, and (the new part!) several Silicon
Graphics Iris workstations. Naturally, the SG machines run their version of
Unix, while the DEC machines are running VMS. Please start with a general
comparison of the two protocols before discussing the specific hardware in
question. Other, very different hardware may/will be added in the future, so
we would like to have more info.

                      Please respond by Email.
                                                Thanks,
                                                         Jim Pritchett

PS. Please, no flames about how dumb/impossible it is to use DECNET on a Unix
machine. We have been told that a third party can make this run for us if we
want it. (Sorry, but I dont have any more info on this.) I dont know whether
the Iris really can run DECNET, I am just relaying the request.

Again, thank you for your help in this matter.

~.
